Michael Owen's official status as a player without a club after Manchester United confirmed not renew his contract.
Owen previously under contract with United, but his contract expired last season and no new contract bids submitted.
But Owen had said it would not take the decision to retire. Reportedly club Stoke City will be the next Owen.
In addition to Owen, the Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak also quit, and their two young players, Liam Jacob and Joe Coll.
